This paper aims at developing a Web-based management information system for construction projects to provide a collaborative environment for the participants. The current practice of the information management in construction projects was summarized based on literature survey and field investigation. The models for the system were established by using the latest information technologies such as Web, central database and three-tire architecture, and a prototype of the system is under development. In the system, XML (eXtensible Markup Language), a standard for describing structured documents was used to integrate the participants' existing management information systems (MIS) with the Web-based system. This paper introduces the background of the study, the establishment of the system models and the application of XML. The results from the implementation of the prototype and case studies will be reported in future papers.
