This paper introduces two constitutive models for clayey soils -(a) Yin and Graham's one-dimensional (1-D) elastic visco-plastic (1-D EVP) model and (b) 3-D elastic visco-plastic model (3-D EVP). The two models are incorporated into finite element (FE) codes for consolidation analysis. The FE program with 1-D EVP model is used to analyse (a) Berthierville test embankment on soft ground in Quebec in Canada and a test embankment on marine deposits at Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong. The FE program with the 3-D EVP model is used to analyse an artificial Tarsiut Island on marine clay in the Beaufort Sea, Canada. The results are analysed and discussed.
