The authors present a new direct shear box equipped with a laser sensor for rock walls morphology measurements. Tests of evolution of the morphology during shearing have been performed on mortar replicas of artificial and natural fractures. The analysis of this evolution has been conducted using a fractal approach based on the variogram method. It appears that it is difficult to relate the fractal dimension to mesoscopic parameters. At the opposite, the intercept is clearly a decreasing function of shear work. A law of evolution is proposed.
