In addition to extensive cultivation as high-quality forage plants, the Agropyron form a vast genetic reservoir which might be used to improve wheat. They are noted for their strong resistance to cold and drought, and have moderate tolerance to salinity(Dewey 1984). Furthermore, they show immunity to wheat diseases such as rusts, powdery mildew, and barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV)(Dong et al. 1992). In order to transfer these desirable genes from the Agropyron into common wheat, hybridization between common wheat and the Agropyron was made since 1930's(Dewey 1984), but failed until the end of 1980's (Chen et al. 1989, 1990; Limin and Fowler 1990; Ahmad and Comeau 1991; Jauhar 1992).
