Fine-ground, surface-treated calcium carbonate is a useful performance additive int he extrusion of blown films. This paper describes the preparation of the 75percent concentrates used for the let-downs and the cost / performance benefits obtained fromthe use of calcium carbonates in blown film applications. Calcium carbonate loadings up to 25percent in HMW HDPE and up to 35percent in LLDPE provide dramatic rate improvements in film linear output as well as critical physical properties. In addition, a mechanism which explains the scientific principles behind the physical property improvements is presented.
