Aluminium Foil-More than just a barrier substrate for flexible packaging

Aluminum foil represents the classical,, high-end barrier" for flexible packaging purposes. Foil manufacturing has been described concisely, explaining the surface character, oxide layer, wettability and unwinding quality, which are determiend by the annelaing procedure to a wide extent. Since the foils used become thinner and thinner barrier defects in aluminum foil arise once dependent on its manufacturing process but also induced by unwinding and the converting process itself. The effect of definite porosity for foil, coated with a plastic layer, upon oxygen barrier has been calculated and compared with reality. Common rules for properly unwinding foil are outlined briefly. Aluminum foil's underestimated contribution to heat seal performance for laminates has been pointed out.
