The objective of this research is to implement a recursive, closed-loop process tracking and control algorithm for a single-piece flow manufacturing scheme that will meet the required daily target quota and minimize shipping and work-in-process inventory while accounting for low and variable product yield rates. The algorithm and its associated tactical production control software system are herein referred to as the prototype production tracking mechanism (PPTM). Implementation of this applied research will have far-reaching significance to US manufacturers?ˉ competitiveness well into the next century, particularly offshore facilities where high turnover and absenteeism, causing significant shocks and disturbances to production, are commonplace.
