Strengthening national programmes and regional collaboration for promoting management and use of plant genetics resources for food and agriculture

Asia and the Pacific region represents approximately 20 percent of the total land area, 23 countries, and nearly 57 percent of the world's population. Agro-ecological features vary from highlands, semi-arid tropics to humid coastal plains with climate varying from temperate to tropical. Owing to the diverse climatic and eco-geographical conditions, a substantial amount of genetic diversity is found in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a cradle of domestication and diversity for many of the world's crop plants and forest species and houses a few mega-diversity centers such as the Indian, the Indonesian, the Indo-Chinese and the Malaysian centers.
