Medical device designers need to consider mechanical,thermal and optical properties in their design with polymers.Also key are property retention after sterilization,chemical resistance to commonly used chemicals in hospitals such as liquids and isopropyl alcohol,and processability during molding of thin parts in multi cavities.Acrylic-based medical devices exhibit excellent clarity,good processability and are relatively inexpensive.Their major weakness has been their limited chemical resistance to lipids and alcohol.A new acrylic-based grade has been developed which exhibits dramatically improved resistance to alcohols and lipids while maintaining the desirable acrylic characteristics of transparency,processability,and property retention after gamma and ethylene oxdie steriliztaion.
