Integration of effective technologies for economic management of root-knot nematodes in tomato nursery

Integration of proven technologies like soil solarization through 25 clear linear low density poly ethylene film for 15 days in hot summer followed by soil application of bicontrol fungus, Paecilomyces lilacinus, neem cake and carbofuran for management of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) was evaluated in tomato nursery. Pooled results (kharif 1991 through 1995) revealed that soil solarization effectively reduced root-knot nematodes and weeds in tomato nursery yielding significantly more numberof transplantable seedlings. Soil applications also gave significant differences for root-knot disease index but differences were non signficant for plant height, total and transplantable seedlings, weed count and weight. Lowest root-knot index was recorded in treatment of carbofuran @ 3 kg/ha followed by P. lilacinus pellet application @ 25 kg/ha. Findings clearly indicated that soil solarization is the best and cheap method of root-knot nematode management While application of P. lilacinus alone remained less effective, however, fungus application after soil solarization proved more effective for root-knot control.
