Three fungal antagonists viz., Trichoderma spp, Aspergillus terreus, Myrothecium verrtcaria and one bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens (TNAU violate No.l) were tested in vitro against 20 isolates of Phytophthora meadii, the fruit and -bud rot pathogenof arecanut palm. In dual cultures Trichoderma spp. caused lysis of the hyphae and did not form inhibition zone. A.terreus M.verrucaria and P.fluorescens inhibited the radial mycelial growth of all the isolates. The other effects of the antagonists on the test fungi in general include thinning of mycelial growth along the meeting zone of the two fungi, abnormal branching of the hyphae and reduction in sporangial production.
