Oilseed brassicas: Developmental traits of plants and disease management

Field and laboratory experiments conducted over a period from 1990-91 to 1996-97 revealed the scope of development of mustard oultivrs with outstanding agronomically acceptable disease management characteristics such as short stature plant with moderate leaf canopy, early maturity (95-100 days) and loging resistance. One such mustard genotype 'divya' has been developed which when sown in the first fortnight of October, besies showing very high degree of tolerance to Alternaria blight, escapes severestaghead phase of white rust associated with downy mildew and the Sclerotinia stem rot disease in comparison with traditionally grown high foliage, tall type (122-186 cm), late maturing (135-140 days) Alternaria susceptible cultivars of mustard such as Varuna, Krishna, Kranti and Pusa Bold. On an average the 'Divya' mustard gave significant harvst index (HI) of 27-28% as against the HI of 21-22% in the case of toria cv PT 303 and 15-20% in mustard cv Krishna, The results of 1996-97 experiment also revealed significant responsiveness of 'Divya' under high input N_(100) P40 K_(40) application with significant increase in seed yield and better disease management.
