Creation of an African Regional Pest Management R and D Network (PESTNET) for Integrated Control of Livestock and Plant Pests and Diseases. Report of the USAID Planning Mission

The feasibility of establishing a collaborative research and development network (PESTNET) for tick control in eastern and southern Africa was explored by an A.I.D. team during a 7/85 trip to the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Kenya, which would assume an initial leadership role in PESTNET. The report, after first adumbrating the damage done by tick pests of livestock and, briefly, by crop pests, provides recommendations as to PESTNET's structure (participating countries and organizations, ICIPE's role); activities (research coordination, personnel development, information dissemination, and technology transfer); and support requirements (from host countries, international institutions, and donors). The format for a planning workshop for initiating the network is briefly discussed, and a budget for PESTNET is proposed.
