Unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFC's) operate with water.They provide very high energy density and regenerate the reactants by combining an electrolyzer and a fuel cell in a dual mode system.A combinatorial method,based on fluorescence detection of electroactivity,was applied to the discovery and optimization of supported bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen electrode in URFC's.By using a consensus map generated from parallel screening,an Ebonex supported electrocatalyst array containing five elements (Rh,Pt,Ru,Os,Ir) was simultaneously optimized for corrosion resistance and catalytic activity in both oxygen reduction and water oxidation.
