Spectroelectrochemical Investigations of Aniline-Thiophene Copolymers

Intrinsically conducting and electrochemically active polymers (ICP) are promising candidates for numerous applications. Nevertheless their properties require still further adaptation and improvement. The use of substituted monomers and post-treatment (sulfonation, secondary doping) are possible routes. A particularly promising approach is the formation of copolymers. Electropolym-erization of these ICPs is very simple provided that both monomers show similar solubilities and electrooxidation potentials in a given electrolyte/solvent system. Starting from a recent report on the electrochemistry of the ani-line/thiophene comonomer solution1 which identified thiophene as an accelerating agent in aniline polymerization we have studied the obtained copolymers with electrochemical methods, in situ UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy and conductivity measurements.
