Species-specific land use data are required to estimate biogenic emissions for air quality modeling. Such data are usually only available at a very coarse resolution and must disaggregated into a model's grid cells. The article describes how species-specific land use data may be provided for the estimation of biogenic emissions. The procedure takes advantage of the geographical information system (GIS) and the relational database management system (RDBMS). RDBMS tables are used to store all tabular and thematical data. The GIS administrates the geometrical data, provides a graphical user interface and the tools for the disaggregation procedure. A grid coverage representation of the model area is created in the procedure. The user can browse the database and select one or more data sets for the disaggregation. The chosen data subsets of the geometrical data are projected on to the specified map projection and intersected with the grid coverage. A spatial selection process creates a table with all information needed for calculation of the weighing factors in the disaggregation procedure. Land use in general categories is provided to fill possible gaps. Finally, data on the foliar biomass density and emission factors are linked and output files are passed to the air quality model.
