In order to overcome the difficulty encountered in the application of LDA to the detailed study of the turbulent flow field in the combustion chamber of a D.I. diesel engine due to the effects of refraction and reflection of laser beams at the inner surfaces of the combustion chamber, a new technology has been developed. It comprises a novel hydraulic analogue test rig. a LDA system and the equal refractive index technique. Experimental results show that the data rate and data validity are high. The detailed information of the whole turbulent flow field in the combustion chamber can be obtained and studied.
