This paper highlights specific procedures associated with the forebay and cold water basin cleaning of an eleven-cell cross flow cooling tower in Northern Alberta at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. site. The cleaning required structural modification of eight cells and a diversion of 50,000 US gallons per minute of water to maintain plant operation. This was the first cleaning of the tower after 20 years of continuous operation and is likely the first successful cold water basin cleaning while maintaining tower operation.
