Plasma deposition of short chain oligoglyme ((CH_3-O-(CH_2-CH_2-O)_n-CH_3), n = 1-4) precursors has been shown by Lopez and Ratner to form an ether-carbon rich, PEO-like film on surfaces. Using tetraglyme (n=4) as a plasma precursor, films have previously been prepared that reduced fibrinogen and albumin adsorption as well as endothelial cell and platelet attachment. In order to better understand the relationship between surface molecular structure and biofouling resistance, ether-rich films were plasma deposited from linear and cyclic precursors, and the detailed surface characterization is summarized here. Plasma precursors consisted of a series of four linear oligo ethylene glycol dimethyl ethers: mono-, di-, tri-, and tetraglyme, and a corresponding series of cyclic oligomers: dioxane, 12-crown-4 ether and 15-crown-5 ether. Films were analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight SIMS (TOF-SIMS) and dynamic contact angle goniometry (DCA).
