The DMOC Replay Tool, an Exercise in COTS and GOTS Together in a Single System

An important component of the USAF Distributed Mission Operations Center's (DMOC) Virtual Flag exercise is the ability to assess throughout and debrief following execution. Key to this ability is a tool that allows the user access to all pertinent exercise data in a manageable representation. In 2006, the DMOC started a project to provide Virtual Flag Mission Assessment and Training personnel a single tool, called the DMOC Replay Tool (DRT), to provide a real-time and repayable visual display of Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) entity, engagement and data link data over a representative event area map, captured DIS voice audio and display of captured video from selected simulation systems. After testing and auditioning several system candidates, the DMOC decided on GeoViz, a Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) system, because of its support of an application programming interface allowing the user to create new capabilities. Used extensively in the last two Virtual Flag exercises and nearing initial release, the DRT contains extensive capabilities added to GeoViz that were developed by the DMOC, a government facility. This paper will explore the Government off the Shelf (GOTS) capabilities designed from exercise requirements and how they were integrated into the COTS GeoViz system to create the DMOC Replay Tool.
