When impacted by a moving motor vehicle, the end of a traffic barrier does not guide the motor vehicle, threatening the safety of its occupants. Three-dimensional impact simulations and an impact experiment using an actual motor vehicle wereperformed in order to study the effectiveness of two traffic barrier end shock absorbing countermeasures; offsetting the ends away from the road so that motor vehicles do not directly impact them and installing facilities to the ends of the trafficbarriers to absorb shock. The results have confirmed that it is possible to count on high impact simulation precision and that shock absorbing facilities effectively protect the safety of passengers.
