EPA and representatives from 12 state environmental agencies are developing a voluntary Guide for Industrial Waste Management to recommend a baseline for protective management of industrial nonhazardous waste (ISW) throughout the country. The Guide will cover all aspects of managing waste in surface impoundments, landfills, waste piles, and land application units. The Guide reflects four underlying principles: 1. Adopt a multimedia approach to protect human health and the environment; 2. Tailor management practices to risk in this enormously diverse universe of waste using the innovative, user-friendly tools provided in the Guide; 3. Reaffirm state and tribal leadership; 4. Foster partnerships among facility managers, the public, and regulatory agencies.
