Solidifying tailings slurry with new binder at Meishan Iron Mine

Meishan Iron Mine produces 2300 tones of tailings every day. The tailings slurry contains a large amount of clay minerals such as kaolinite, montmorillonite and the like. These tailings are very difficult to concentrate and store using traditional methods. This paper presents a new technology developed to dispose of and make use of these tailings. A solidifying material has been used as binder to solidify the tailing slurry into lumps, solidifying agent added when the tailings slurry is concentrated to about 70percent of solids by weight. The tailing lumps can be used for filling, to fill in exhausted underground mines or for other purposes.
