In vitro stimulation results of oocytes of shrimp Penaeus chinensis by three different concentration 17 a-hydroxyprogesterone (2 × 10~(-6), 2 × 10~(-7), and 2 × 10~(-8) ug/ml) are reported. The results showed that the hormone had significant effect on the oocytes culture in vitro. Under identical culture condition, the mean oocyte diameters in the experimental groups with hormone were 30 % ~ 50 % larger than that in contrast groups without hormone. With increase of hormone concentration, reproduction of oogonia and increase of oocyte diameter quickened. Through a week culture, the mean diameters of oocytes in the experimental groups were 85.1 ± 12.4, 102.7 ± 11. 5, and 131.4 ± 12. 2 μm respectively, while that in contrast group was 67. 7 ± 9. 2 μm. The biggest oocyte was about 160μm in diameter, and there were no follicle cells around the surface of it. The membrane of the oocyte would burst and the contents exposed, if it was cultured continuously.
