Marine Pathology Evolution in the Last Five Years:The Point of View of a National Reference Laboratory for Fish and Shellfish Diseases

It can be seen that the evolution in Italian fish diseases in the last five years is not connected only to water temperatures (as vibriosis and trichodiniasis) but also with the introduction ot new pathologies such as pasteurellosis and nodavirosis. We suggest that a systematic program for health control could prevent serious outbreaks of diseases and thus prevent the introduction or inadvertent transfer of disease between fish farms to wild stocks or viceversa . We believe that an active surveillance of fish health can include periodical inspections in the farms associated to passive surveillance develop by laboratory reports. Other collected test results from research programs suggest it will be a good strategy to limit the evolution of pathologies.
