The effect on the surface cleaning of rinsing immediately after plating was studied. Zn and Zn-Ni plating were carried out in a chloride bath in a CAROSEL cell, and plated specimens were dipped in various rinsing solutions and flushed in deionized water. The rinse solutions tried were sulfuric, nitric and hydrochloric acids. The surface appearance of the deposit was influenced by the type of acid and the condition of the rinsing solution. The etched thickness and structure of oxide film were found to be important factors for controlling surface appearance. The rinsed surface was examined by X-ray coating thickness meter, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, color difference meter and glossmeter.
