In the 1990s the world iron and steel market has been suffering from overproduction for many years. As a result, stiff competition has developed between manufacturers. Due to strong increase of demand especially in China in the beginning of the third millennium, the earnings of the strong and increasing business during the last years gives potential for investments especially in the modernisation of the infrastructure. It is evident for manufacturers to retain or regain competitiveness in the world market they must have modern plants allowing high productivity, low energy consumption and limited environmental impact. Primarily these investments are made in the steel production processes for increased productivity and improved quality. But also the modernisation of the power plants is of high importance for this industry.
