CFB technology has been scaled-up and demonstrated in the size class of around 250 MW{sub}e. One of the biggest advantages of CFB is its capability of burning different kinds of fuels, either at the same time or separately. The utilization of biomass alone or in co-combustion with coal has been demonstrated on this scale in the Alholmens Kraft CFB for over two years now. Alholmens Kraft produces electricity for owners in Finland and in Sweden and also supplies process steam to the nearby UPM-Kymmene paper mill, and for district heating in the town of Pietarsaari, Finland. The maximum capacity of the CFB boiler is 240 MW{sub}e. Due to its location at the pulp and paper mill, high reliability and good controllability were the most important design criteria for the boiler. Steam production for the mill must be safeguarded all year-round, apart from during the mill's short annual service shutdowns.
