In this study, we developed an approach to estimate individual drivers' usual braking timing (UBT) in crossing pedestrian scenario. Based on the analysis of braking data collected in normal driving condition, we found a complex 2-layer-distribution of driver's UBT resulted from various situations of crossing pedestrians. We hypothesized a mechanism of driver's Total Perception Risk Estimate (T_PRE), which is composed of (1) longitudinal risk perception resulted from the approach the subject vehicle toward the pedestrian, (2) lateral risk perception resulted from approach of the pedestrian toward the subject vehicle, (3) a dynamic switching mechanism of driver's perception. We validated that the 2-layer-distribution of individual drivers' UBT can be expressed by a certain index value of the proposed T_PRE. This result enables the possibility of predicting the scenes of delayed braking timing (DBT), and therefore, enables personal adaptation of system support timing in order to alert individual driver to the collision risk from early timing without nuisance to the driver.
