Interior Camera Use for Automated Driving-Camera technology closes a gap in the driver-vehicle communication

Retaining the driver's attention on the actual driving task has long been recognized as instrumental in avoiding distraction-related accidents. With the advent of highly automated driving functions there is an added necessity to detect the driver's state of awareness because this is an important bit of information for managing a successful take-over procedure at the end of an automated driving phase. An interior camera monitors the driver's alertness and direction of gaze. In order to achieve a high level of reliable and precise data on the driver status, the camera system and its integration into the vehicle have to meet many requirements. Once integrated, the interior camera can be used for other innovative use cases on top of driver monitoring. The interior camera solution discussed below will be integrated into a mass production vehicle in 2017.
