An experimental study was performed to clarify the feasibility of a premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) natural gas engine with direct injection. Using a single cylinder engine, first the PCCI operation was conducted with port mixing under various intake-air temperatures and the fundamental characteristics of engine performance, exhaust emissions and combustion were obtained. Secondly, direct injection was applied to a PCCI engine and the results show that the injection timing has remarkable effects on the stability of combustion, combustion efficiency and NO{sub}x emissions.
