Visualization and measurement of oil flow in oil supply passages in a transparent crankshaft

This paper presents the results of visualization and measurement of oil flow in the oil supply passages in a transparent crankshaft. Adequate oil supply to the eon-rod hearing side became difficult due to aeration occurred in the passage when supply pressure to the passage was lower. The limit of the supply pressure was different depending on the types of the oil passage. The phenomena were analyzed by the combined model of oil passage flow and EHL in bearings. Consequently the estimate of supply oil pressure which does not generate aeration was attained.
