One-piece brake discs of motorcycles have some small holes at the flange for heat dissipation and refreshing pads. Tiny cracks exceptionally occur around holes under a severe condition when discs have a certain number of holes and layout. In order to reveal the mechanism for crack initiation around holes in the flange of one-piece brake discs, brake tests under overloading conditions were conducted using two types of brake discs. Unsteady heat transfer analyses were also conducted to estimate the temperature distribution in detail. Based on these results the design method for reducing cracks is proposed.
