In a glow-assisted methanol diesel engine, combustion at low loads can be improved by using a slit injection nozzle. At high speeds and loads, however, combustion deteriorates when this type nozzle is used, because air entrainment into the spray is caused to be insufficient. Thus, in this study, engine tests were conducted by combining EGR and turbocharging with the use of a slit injection nozzle, for the purpose of recovering exhaust gas energy and promoting air entrainment into the fuel spray. The results indicated that both engine performance and exhaust gas emissions were improved simultaneously over a wide range of operating conditions.
