Development of the Compact Balance Shaft Module for Four-Cylinder Gasoline Engine

Development results of compact balance shaft module (BSM) for four cylinder gasoline engine are presented in this paper. The development target of the compact BSM is lower cost and higher performance than the present BSM, which is being mass-produced in 2.4L gasoline engine of Hyundai Motor Company. To achieve the target, the new BSM has a unique and simple design that a pair of gears in BSM drives two balance shafts as a transfer gear, as well as supplies lubricant to the engine as an oil pump. Development was focused on gear deign, which should satisfy all requirements of the oil pump, and also do not exceed development target of noise level. After optimizing shape of gear, the very simple but very efficient BSM can make cost-down of about 48% and reduce weight of about 18% in comparison with the present BSM.
