A Study on the Influence of Using a Mobile Telephone on Driver's Behaviors

A study was conducted to examine the influence of using a mobile telephone on driver's behaviors. Two hundred and three drivers answered questionnaire about the use of a mobile telephone while driving. Ten drivers among them joined driving simulator experiments for driving with and without using a hand-free type mobile telephone. In the experiments their eyes' motions towards the surrounding objects was observed while driving. A multi-variate analysis was used to classify the attitude of drivers toward using a mobile telephone while driving to identify two factors; ①affirmative attitude and ②negative attitude for using a mobile phone. The results show that their fields of vision occasionally go away from objects at which they should carefully look while driving. It is indicated that concentration and perception of drivers tend to be lowered by using a mobile telephone while driving even if the telephone is a hand-free type. The results of multi-variate analysis and experiments show that drivers' recognition about dangers caused by using a mobile telephone while driving is important to avoid traffic accident risks.
