In order to reduce cold-start emissions, we have investigated a method that uses a new-type catalytic converter and. a system injecting secondary air into the exhaust. For this purpose, we developed the catalytic converter which is comprised of three catalyst sections with higher noble metal in upper side catalyst which consists of the dense type substrate (0.05mm/ 900cpsi). Experiments injecting secondary air in the exhaust were carried out under high idle condition and acceleration condition. As a result, it was found that cold-start emissions can be reduced substantially by optimizing the quantity and timing of secondary air injection and the catalytic converter.
