Torch ignition generated in a pre-chamber may improve the combustion of natural gas in internal combustion engines resulting in greater indicated thermal efficiency. But it is conceivable that the heat loss associated with torch ignition may decrease the indicated thermal efficiency on the other hand. In this experiment, an analytical study on the energy balance of a natural gas fueled engine by using a combustion chamber with no pre-chamber and a combustion chamber with different configurations of pre-chamber such as the diameter of the passageway, the volume ratio and the pre-chamber shape. It has been found that the indicated thermal efficiency decreased to a small extent even though the heat loss caused by employing the pre-chamber increased to u large extent. And also the effect of the different configurations of the pre-chamber on the heat loss has been found.
