The input/output (I/O) bottleneck of CMOS VLSIs has recently become a severe problem due to increases in the operating frequency and the number of transistors. With the development of smart pixel technology, the use of optical interconnection has become a more attractive solution [1]-[3]. This paper proposes the optical system LSI (OS-LSI) that uses smart pixels and polymeric waveguides that form 2D (two-dimensional, waveguide-based) optical interconnects. The bandwidth of 2D optical interconnects using optical waveguides is not as wide as that of 3D interconnects, however, it is sufficiently wide to eliminate the I/O bottleneck [4]-[6].
