Free-space microchannel interconnects provide high density, parallel communication data links. A number of key technological advances have made the construction of these systems feasible - e.g. the availability of large 2D arrays of optoelectronic devices and low cost, efficient diffractive optic elements. Micro-channels offer several advantages over a conventional optics implementation however the performance of microchannel systems is sensitive to misalignment and they require a robust and well aligned optical/optomechanical setup[1].
