Small portable radio provides enhanced situational awareness in law enforcement missions

The Boeing Company in Anaheim, California, is developing a low-cost, lightweight, portable system that provides the capability for user identification, location, and both voice and secure data communication. The combat survivor evader locator (CSEL) provides the users in the field with precision GPS-based geoposition and navigation data, two-way OTH secure digital message communication to joint search and rescue centers (JSRCs), OTH beacon operation, and LOS voice communication and sweep tone/beacon capabilities. Using a combination of global positioning system (GPS) and over-the- horizon (OTH) techniques, as well as local airborne and ground dissemination assets, information can be transmitted to a central command and control (C$+2$/@)node for integration and display (see Figure 1).
