In critically ill patients with hyperglycemia, it has been recently shown that mortality and morbidity can be reduced by keeping glycemia within 80-110 mg/dL. However, it is not easy to regulate their blood glucose levels due to time variability of insulin sensitivity. In this study, we develop a nonlinear model predictive blood glucose control system using the Continuation Generalized Minimum RESidual (C/GMRES) method. Simulation results show that, in patients with time-varying insulin sensitivity, glycemia can be regulated within desirable levels during continuous parenteral glucose delivery.
