In this paper we present the first demonstration of IP layer restoration of GbE channels transported over Gb/s and 10 Gb/s links and show restoration times that reach and exceed SONET restoration specification. We report on restoration using both IP layer and link layer failure detection. We show that with our fast IP layer detection restoration times of less than a milli-second are achieved, with link layer failure detection further improving these restoration times. Moreover, the performance impact of our IP layer restoration scheme is dominated by the detection and propagation time, We conclude that IP layer restoration with GbE provides an attractive alternative to SONET for IP-centric metropolitan and wide area networks.
