Optical networks using WDM technology can provide high capacities between their source-destination node pairs. This, however, also implies that greater care needs to be taken to protect the network as substantial traffic and revenues may be lost in case of failures. The work reported in [1] and [2] discussed the problem of wavelength assignment in such networks. In this paper, we consider the operation of these networks when protection against failures is also to be considered. We follow a path protection method for this, as the optical cross-connects (OXC) will provide a high flexibility in light-path routing.
