Directly modulated lasers will remain key components for telecommunication systems as long as they will respond to two main requirements: cost effectiveness and robustness. At the level of the production, this translates into devices with large optical alignment tolerances. For system operators, the main requirements are high power lasers in order to share the output beam into several channels, as well as extreme ease of modulation. The most stringent system demand is that of lasers operating under high extinction ratio (ER). In order to satisfy these needs, we have developed lasers with low divergence (≈15°×15°) that can operate under GHz rates with peak power over 25 mW without floor even at high ER. After simple selection, we report on lasers that achieve floor free, low penalty (<2 dB) 2.5 Gbit/s transmission on 90 km at power exceeding 25 mW for extinction ratio up to 14 dB.
