EVALUATIONS OF PLANTING DATE, VARIETY RESPONSE, AND SELECTED FUNGICIDES ON COTTON BOLL ROT IN SOUTH ALABAMA

Three trials were conducted at the Auburn University Gulf Coast Research Substation, Fairhope, AL from 2002 through 2004 to determine the effect of planting date, cotton variety and fungicide efficacy on cotton boll rot. The planting date evaluation consisted to two varieties, Sure Grow 215 BG/RR (early season) and Delta Pine DPL 555 BG/RR (late season) that were planted on two week intervals beginning in mid April and concluding in June. The cotton variety trial consisted of 50 early and full seasonvarieties and was planted the first week of May. Quadris 2SC, Topsin M, Folicur, Terraclor 4F, and Rovral 4F were applied to DPL 555 at early and full bloom to determine efficacy of these selected fungicides for management of boll rot. Planting date evaluations indicated the early planting dates of mid and late April had a higher incidence of boll rot as compared to the mid and late May planting dates. No differences in disease indices were found between early and full season varieties. First bloom fungicide applications were more effective in increasing yields as compared to full bloom applications.
