Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, remarkable achievements have been made in vegetable research and production in China. In 1998, the total vegetable growing area was 11.27 million hectares and the total vegetable production reached 345 million tons with per capita occupancy of 276kg. Adequate and balanced supply of vegetable products with a large number of varieties has been provided. The prices of the products are stable. The vegetable production bases have been further strengthened, the production and marketing process has been speeded up and the production modernization level has been raised. The total annual production value of vegetable crops has reached RMB 250 billion. Among the farming industries, grain crops occupy first place, vegetables come second. Science and technology has played an important role in the development of vegetable industry. Science and technology is the back up of preharvest, during harvest and postharvest.
