Based on numerical simulation of the temperature field and solid fraction field, a calculating method of net volume variation within isolated zones formed during the solidification process of ductile iron (DI) castings is proposed to predict shrinkage defects. The foundry technology of a large, complex DI casting-cylinder block for a marine diesel engine-is optimized by using the proposed method.
