Nonlinear glass containing dispersed metal nanoparticles are promising for all optical switching devices and for optical computer systems because of their ultrafast nonlinear response. The nonlinear response time measured in femtosecond pump-probe experiments is as short as 0.7 ps, which appears to be sufficient for nonlinear optical device applications. On the other hand, the value of |χ{sup}(3)|/α, which is one of the figures of merit of nonlinear materials, is of the order of 10{sup}(-11) esu·cm. It is necessary to increase this value to at least 10{sup}(-9) esu·cm for laser diode operation.
