Refurbishment of UK civil infrastructure - the benefits of an intelligent approach

This paper reviews the state of the UK's Civil Infrastructure Systems, highlighting the need for an intelligent approach to repair and renewal. Though a case study on the North Seaton Bridge we discuss the UK's existing approval to renewal, and show how an alternative approach based on 'intelligent design and construction' and 'smart structures' offers most potential for carrying out effective and appropriate refurbishment walks from both the viewpoint of safety and cost.
